If you can't describe your icon in one sentence — "it's a [single noun]" — it's too busy.
Rule 2: Limited palette (2–3 colors)
The icons that look premium use 2 or 3 colors maximum, including the background. A flat colored background plus a contrasting icon shape plus an optional accent color is the formula.

- Rainbow gradients (read as 2014)
- Multi-color illustrations with 5+ hues
- Photographic backgrounds (always look messier than solid)

Rule 3: Background fills the entire square
The icon should be a single solid color or smooth gradient that fills the full 1024×1024. No scenes, no patterns, no photographic backgrounds.
Why: at small sizes (60×60 on home screens, 29×29 in search), patterns and scenes turn to noise. A flat solid background reads cleanly at every size.
Rule 4: Strong silhouette readable at 60×60
Test your icon at home-screen size (60×60). The central subject should be unambiguous even at that scale. If you have to squint or guess, the icon is too detailed.
Practical test: take your 1024×1024 icon, scale it to 60×60 in any image editor, look at it for 1 second, then look away. Could you describe what's on it? If not, simplify the central subject.
Rule 5: No text
Don't put your app name in your icon. Apple displays the name underneath the icon on the home screen — putting it inside the icon is redundant and amateur.
Exception: if your brand identity is typographic — like the "X" app or a single-letter mark — that's not really "text", that's typography-as-logo. Different category.
Rule 6: No company logos that aren't yours
